Sailing in Italy
We are excited to inform you of the launch of two new bases in Southern Italy opening in May 2008. Giving you an opportunity to experience the best that this beautiful, romantic country has to offer, we will be opening one base in Palermo, Sicily and then one at the tip of the foot in Tropea.
Italy is a joy to discover, it's dreamy light and sumptuous landscapes seem made for romance, and its years of experience in history, culture and delicious cuisine seduces just about anyone who goes there. Visit beautiful old towns and ancient ports and cruise some of the sunniest and most romantic coastlines in Europe.
Both bases are located in southern Italy and positioned perfectly to allow you to explore the best that this beautiful country has to offer. You can visit Roman ruins, stare in awe renaissance art, relax on stunning beaches and choose to dine in a variety of delightful restaurants.
You will be amazed at the views as you sail through these lush waters past the rocky coastlines, beautiful castles that you can explore.
Another unique and awe-inspiring attraction to sailing from our bases in Tropea and Palermo, is that fantastic views of some of Europe's greatest volcanoes. Travel from our base at Tropea to Stromboli, the biggest active volcano around. See the smoke of the peak joining the steam that rises from the water. Stromboli has the blackest beaches of all the Aeolian Islands.
For a day of relaxing and tranquility spend a day at Beautiful Vulcano, famous for its bath in the warm waters of the submarine springs.
The Climate here is Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The sheer height of some of the larger volcanoes and mountains cause a sharp difference in climate. On the coast the average temperature is around 19°C, which is likely to drop to around 13°C inland.
Palermo Base
On the northwest coast of Sicily, Palermo is a place where Roman, Greek, Arab and Norman cultures meet. Palermo is the capital of Sicily and is located in a marvelous inlet by Monte Pellegrino, self-described as 'the most beautiful promontory in the world'.
Sicily is well known for its unique natural beauty and the highest active volcano in Europe 'Mount Etna'. The coast offers a landscape of fascinating beauty, with smaller islets scattered all around the coast. The Sunsail base is 20 miles from Palermo International Airport and can also be reached by ferry and hydrofoil from Naples.
From this base, sailing between history and nature you are able to uncover the Aegadean Islands - Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo. From here, you could head towards the heart of the Tirreno in the direction of Ustica - paradise on earth, with many diving opportunities, and a very beautiful natural reserve. Alternatively, you could sail southwards to where Pantelleria, Lampedusa and Linosa islands wait to be discovered and where the sea is as old as the world. Set sail from these islands and the coasts of Malta and Tunisia are easily reachable.
Tropea
Tropea is one of the most beautiful towns in Calabria on the south Tyrrhenian coast, and has successfully preserved its 16th century features, offering both historical and architectural delights. It overlooks a crystal clear blue sea with magnificent white, sandy beaches and impressive rock formations.
The new Sunsail base is located in the main marina, next to a shopping area and open air theater. This is the ideal departure point to visit southern Italy, Sicily or the Aeolian Islands, only 30 miles away.
The group of seven islands which make up the Aeolians are separated from each other by just a few short miles. Stromboli is Europe's biggest active volcano after Etna. The island of Basiluzzo, close to Panerea is uninhabited and an ideal place for swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Panarea, is the smallest but by far the most picturesque. Lipari, is the oldest and largest of the Aeolian Islands. This elevated and craggy island has spectacular beaches and breathtaking ragged coasts whose walls rise from below the sea. Vulcano, is famous for its baths in the warm waters of its underwater springs. Salina, is the island with the highest peaks and the only Aeolian island with blooming vegetation. Filicudi, is a beautiful island where time stops - electricity was installed just 10 years ago! The last, Alicudi, is the most isolated of the Aeolian Islands.
